The Community
Northville
is a picturesque rural community located on the Great
Sacandaga Lake in the southern foothills of the Adirondack
Mountains. Albany, the State Capitol, is 65 miles to
the southeast, while Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls
are approximately 50 miles distant. The area is easily
reached via the NYS Thruway (Exits 27 and 28) and NYS
Routes 30 and 30A.
Population of the village is 1100, with
a like number of residents in the surrounding township
of Northampton. Seasonal residents and vacationers more
than double the area population during the summer months.
Recreational opportunities abound during
all seasons of the year. The Great Sacandaga Lake and
numerous streams in the Sacandaga Basin provide opportunities
for fishing and other water sports. Forested uplands
provide hiking, cross country ski trails and hunting.
Sacandaga Golf Course, a nine-hole course, is located
in Sacandaga Park. Northville is the southern terminus
of the Northville-Lake Placid Trail, a 133 mile trail
that traverses the Adirondack Park north to south and
is maintained by the Adirondack Club. Nearby on the
Great Sacandaga is a Municipal Beach, a State Boat Launch
and the Northampton Beach Campsite operated by the NYS
Department of Environmental Conservation.
Village
and area businesses provide needed goods and services.
Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown, larger communities
are less than a forty-five minutes drive.
Major industries and occupations are largely
forest related, including Adirondack Furniture, which
produces and markets high-pressure laminated furniture.
A district office of the NYS Department of Environmental
Conservation, employing 30-35 persons, is located in
the village. The Northville Central School District
employs approximately 90 persons. Many area residents
commute to employment in other communities. The General
Electric Schenectady plant is also a major area employer.
